Remote identification” can be defined as a concept of a system that identifies a UAS operating in the national airspace (NAS). In other words, remote drone identification system provides crucial information, such as pilots’ identification, manufacturer’s identity, position of drone, velocity, altitude, owner information, trajectory information, current and future flight plans, among others to the flight information management system (FIMS).

Get full description of remote drone identification system market

The Unmanned Ariel System (UAS) Identification and Tracking Aviation Rulemaking Committee included some of the methods as their top recommendations. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on the other hand, are in the process of developing standards for working on each of the recommended method. The aim of each method is to send the collected data to an FAA-approved internet-based database. However, there are significant benefits, differences, and drawbacks to each approach.

The two methods for remote identification are:

1. Network-based solution

2. Broadcast-based solution

1.Network-Based Identification

Network-based identification leverages all the network connected devices on a licensed spectrum. It is a system where operators connect to many FAA-approved UAS service suppliers (USS), which serve as a bridge between operator and the FAA systems via network APIs. A network-based identification system mainly includes the following three technological solutions for transmission of data:

Networked Cellular

Satellite-based identification systems

Software-based (SW) flight notification

2.Broadcast-Based Solution

Broadcast-based solution is another useful method of identifying drones operating in airspace. Some of the examples of broadcast remote ID are Intel’s Open Drone ID concept and uAvionix Drone Aware. Broadcast based identification system mainly consists of technological solutions for the transmission of data. Following are technologies that come under broadcast-based solutions:

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B)

Low Power Direct RF

Unlicensed integrated C2

Visual line of coding

Benefits of Remote Identification

With prominent advancements in technology and communication systems, the drone industry has great expectations regarding the applications of drones. However, the concerns regarding safety and security have been rising along with the rising usage of drones. Remote identification is a boon for government, homeland security, and commercial industry, globally. Government research facilities such as nuclear research centers, defense and security facilities, and many more can use remote identification to secure their surrounding areas, as these facilities are easy target for terrorists to espionage and to carry out attacks. Also, drone identification is an absolute necessity in critical area infrastructures, such as stadiums, nuclear power plants, and chemical industries, to protect and prevent any mishap caused by rogue drones.
