PlastiLoop: A Recycled Plastic Brand Launched

Veolia is a France-based company working in the production of recycled components to ensure environmental sustainability. It has launched a new brand of recycled plastics and services under PlastiLoop. The launch of the brand was announced at the K 2022 fair in Dusseldorf, Germany, and it is designed to cater to varying sectors globally and bring together a wide pool of industry experts and recycling facilities.

PlastiLoop will utilize Veolia’s 37 plastic recycling plants in 14 countries worldwide. It aims to provide customers with a variety of ready-to-use recycled resins, namely, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, and polycarbonate.

These resins can be fed into production lines in multiple industrial sectors, including packaging, home, and appliances, automotive, textiles, agriculture, industrial and logistics, building, and construction.

This article will dive deep into the story of PlastiLoop and its contribution to the environment.

What is PlastiLoop?

PlastiLoop is a combination of a wide network of experienced experts aiming to support customers in their successful ecological transformation of plastics, offering a unique and structured range of grades and addressing the needs of industrial clients for various applications.

PlastiLoop enables customers to source recycled plastics through a structured application-driven range of polymers addressing their specific needs. Under this brand, a pragmatic response will be provided to a growing number of industries willing to shift to recycled plastics usage from first-hand plastic and thus cut the carbon footprints in action to save resources.

How will PlastiLoop contribute to recycling plastic?

PlastiLoop aims to create around 610,000 tons of circular polymers with the help of 1,000 plastic recycling employees annually. Currently, PlastiLoop caters to over 300 industry customers.

Estelle Brachlianoff, chief executive officer (CEO) of Veolia, said, “The new PlastiLoop offer brings together all technical and commercial expertise in recycled plastics to provide the users with the best possible support through customized solutions. Through its experts and its various recycling plants ensuring the finest access to the recycled plastic deposits, it offers the strength of the Group.”

Choosing recycled plastic not only saves resources but also achieves a considerable reduction in CO₂ emissions, up to 75% less than virgin plastic. As a global champion of ecological transformation, through this offer, Veolia is creating more outlets for recycled material and promoting the structuring of this sector worldwide.

Role of PlastiLoop in Circulating the Economy

Plastics are versatile materials, but their usage makes them incredibly wasteful. Often, oil and gas are extracted from the Earth to make plastic products, designed in a way that they can only be used once, and this is called a linear take-make-waste model.

Thus, millions of tonnes of plastic end up in landfills, burned or leaked into the environment.

PlastiLoop makes it possible to rethink the design, use, and reuse of plastics, creating a circular economy through recycled plastic. The circular economy is an economic system that focuses on manufacturing materials designed in a way that can be reused.

Through PlastiLoop, products are designed to ensure zero materials loss and zero leaked toxins to induce maximum usage of each process, material, and component.

The adaptation of the sustainable process of manufacturing plastic and later recycling the used plastic can create a high impact and benefit society and the environment. PlastiLoop is a combination of redesign and innovation in business models, design, materials, packaging, and reprocessing technologies which ends up creating a

circular economy.

Why choose recycled plastic?

Recycled packaging and plastic recycling rates are slowly improving around the world, and PlastiLoop is creating this change in society.

Following are a few reasons why recycled plastic is beneficial to use:

Diminished reliance on fossil fuels: With every ton of plastic recycled, 16.3 barrels of oil are saved. Thus, recycled plastic is an efficient method of transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Reduced use of natural resources: Recycled plastic gives a second life to valuable resources that are useful in the circulating economy.

More energy-efficient manufacturing methods: It requires around 5,774 kWh of energy to manufacture plastic, but with recycled plastic, energy consumption is quite less, which is enough to charge a Tesla battery more than 100 times.

Fewer landfills and cleaner oceans: Plastic dump are a huge cause of landfills; thus, using recycled plastic that is already present in the natural environment is a great opportunity to reduce pollution.

Conclusion

Veolia believes in circularizing the plastics economy, and thus with the launch of PlastiLoop, the company is creating a push for ‘design-to-recycle’ products offering eco-design expertise and certification packaging.

Moreover, it promotes extended producer responsibility and collection schemes to generate qualitative plastic feedstocks.
